The decline in the number of births since 2008 has stalled, remaining relatively flat in 2013, according to the latest data from the National Center for Health Statistics. Last year the number of births totaled 3.96 million, up a mere 0.1% from 3.95 million in 2012.
In addition to the most recent birth statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics, this report also features statistics on the ideal age to have a first child. Americans say the average ideal age for women to begin having children is 25; and age 27 for men, according to a poll by Gallup Inc. conducted in August 2013.
