Kids Today Birth Statistics Report, 2015

This report originally published in the July/August 2015 print issue of Kids Today

Last year, the number of births in the United States totaled 3.99 million, a 1% increase from the 3.93 million in 2013, according to the most recent preliminary figures from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). This is the first time since 2007 the nation had a rise in births, ending the downward trend since the Great Recession.

In addition to the most recent birth statistics from the NCHS, this report also includes data on the time of day newborns are born. Newborn babies are most likely to be delivered during daytime hours, according to the NCHS 2013 birth certificate data. The NCHS attributes this growth to increase of induced labor and cesarean deliveries in the last few decades.
