Originally published in the August 2015 issue of Home & Textiles Today

This year's H&TT Retail Giants report features a bit of the unexpected – a surprising takeover in the Top 10, more upward movement for pure play e commerce retailers, and the arrival of bargain outlet whose recent public offering revealed it to be a bigger player in the space than many realized.

Also something of a surprise – 90% of the retailers in this year’s ranking posted market share gains in 2014. That’s a big turnaround from 2013, when slightly more than one-third of the pack saw their home textiles sales decline – including half of the Top 10.

In this year’s ranking, Kmart and Kohl's were the only Top 10 retailers to lose ground, and Kohl's was nearly break-even.

Home & Textiles Today's exclusive survey of the Top 50 home textiles retailers ranks the top U.S. retailers by sales of 2014 home textiles. All textiles categories, bed, bath, kitchen, table linen and window coverings, including alternative window coverings, custom decorating and accessories that are generally sold with textile items, are included in the sales estimates.

In order to be eligible for the ranking, each retailer must sell more than one home textile category. The ranking crosses all formats of retailing. Companies are classified by their primary channel of distribution. Channels include discounters; specialty stores; home improvement centers; department stores; dollar stores; direct-to-consumer retailers that sell primarily through the Internet, catalogs and/or television; warehouse membership clubs; furniture stores; and supercenters, which sell both food and general merchandise in their mix. For Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target, the ranking includes discount stores and supercenters.

All home textiles sales information, except for publicly held companies that break out line-of- business sales for home textiles, are Home & Textiles Today market research estimates. Sales figures are given for the 12-month period ending closest to December 31, 2014. Individual retailer descriptions include the date of the fiscal year end or the 12-month periods that deviate significantly from that date.

Sales estimates are based on information from a variety of sources including the companies themselves, public company fi lings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, discussions with industry analysts and suppliers and published and unpublished reports, including newspaper articles in various retail trading areas.

This ranking is by no means comprehensive and does not represent the entire industry. More than the 50 retailers listed are vital companies within the industry. Home & Textiles Today chooses not to include some companies due to lack of verification of sales figures.

In cases where companies have identical sales of home textiles, the one with the fastest sales growth is ranked higher. Sales were assumed fl at for the retailer where 2013 data was not available when comparing total 2014 and 2013 data for the Top 50.
