From the June 2004 issue of Home Accents Today We’ve taken an in-depth look at licensing in our exclusive report for which we surveyed retailers, vendors and licensors about the role of licensed product in the home accents industry. More than three-fourths of retailer responses came from home accent specialists, with the balance from furniture stores, gift specialists, design boutiques and lighting specialists. Most retailers represent small stores, nearly three-fourths of which have total sales of less than $1 million and one-fifth have total sales between $1 million and $5 million. Two-fifths of the retailers are located in the South. Home accents account for a median of 50% of the sample’s annual sales. More than 40% of responding retailers carry at least one licensed product in at least one home accent product category. Slightly more than 40% of responding vendors have total estimated sales of home accents of less than $5 million. Nearly one-fourth have home accent sales of $10 million or more, with 13% reporting sales of $25 million or more. Two-fifths of responding home accent vendors sell licensed product in at least one home accent product category. Nearly one-half of responding licensors have combined retail sales of less than $5 million; about one-fifth have sales between $10 million and $25 million; and another third have sales of $25 million or more, with nearly one-fifth reporting retail sales of $100 million or more. One-third of licensors represent one property; nearly one-fifth represent two to five properties; one-tenth represent six to nine; and more than one-third represent 10 or more properties.
