The 2008 Universe Study breaks the home accent universe into nine product categories: Decorative Accessories, Accent Furniture, Lamps, Wall Decor, Area Rugs, Lighting Fixtures, tabletop, Soft Goods and Permanent Botanicals.
Estimated 2008 total sales are provided for each product category, along with 2008 estimated sales by distribution channels. The report also projects 2009 total sales for the home accents industry and the nine product categories. Figures for 2007, first printed in Home Accent Today's 2006 Universe Study, have been reviesd based on new and updated information. All figures are retail sales figures and do not include second-hand or used merchandise.
Home Accents Today's editorial and retail team collaborated to estimate the industry retail sales and distribution segments. A wide variety of sources were used, including: home accent product data from EASI Demographics, home accent product and price data from Home Accents Today and HGTV's COnsumer Views Survey and Home Accents Today's Consumer Buying Trends Surveys, retail sales figures from Home Accent Today's 2008 and 2007 Top 50 Retailers, Personal Consumption Expenditure data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Consumer Expenditure Survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics, retail trade figures from the U.S. Census Bureau's Census of Retail Trade, import figures from the International Trade Commission, public filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, conversations with retailers, vendors and industry analysts and newspaper and other reports on various retail markets and retailers.
