This exclusive survey asked home accent retailers how they were coping with the economy, more specifically about their 2009 versus 2008 annual sales, inventory levels, reordering behavior and buying position. They may have been struggling but they’re encouraged about the future and hopeful about their buying position as they look towards markets early in the New Year. Retailers shared specific survival strategies and changes they’ve made in their market attendance and market shopping practices. Queried about plans for upcoming markets, retailers reported on which products they will add, drop or stand pat on and what price points they will be looking for at market.
More than 100 retailers responded to an online survey conducted during September and October. Respondents included home accents stores and gift specialty stores, interior designers and full-line furniture stores along with a small number of lamp or lighting specialists, home textile specialists, craft galleries and glass-and-mirror stores.
The majority of the respondents, 78%, had 2009 annual sales of under $1 million. About 15% had sales between $1 million and $5 million. The remaining 7% had sales in excess of $5 million.
The survey was conducted and analyzed by Home Accents Today’s Market Research team, led by Research Specialist Judi Fulbright.
