Originally published in the September 29, 2014 issue of Furniture Today

Traditional styles accounted for 30% of all unit case good sales last year, slightly above contemporary styles, which own 28% of all unit sales. That's according to retailers answering Furniture/Today's exclusive Case Goods Style Survey and accounting for master bedroom, youth bedroom, formal dining and casual dining unit sales combined for all price points.

In 2012, the last time Furniture/ Today conducted this survey, traditional designs owned a 24% market share and contemporary stood atop all case good unit sales with a 32% share, based on 2011 sales.

In the new survey, traditional is strongest in the formal dining category, where it comprises 34% of all unit sales and in master bedroom, where it accounts for 31% of all unit sales. According to one responding retailer, "Master bedroom has seen a return to traditional."

Furniture/Today's exclusive report, the 2014 Case Goods Style Survey, reflects the answers of furniture stores operating 200 storefronts in the U.S. Their unit sales of case goods were used as the basis for market share of the styles.

Contacted online during June and July, retailers based responses on their 2013 unit sales for different styles in master bedroom, youth bedroom, formal dining and casual dining at low, middle, upper-middle and high price points.

To determine market share, responses were weighted to reflect a retailer's unit sales in each product category and at each price point level. For example, the response from a retailer with annual sales of $20 million in master bedroom was given greater weight than sales from a store generating $5 million for that category. Case goods made up 37% of responding retailers' 2013 total furniture sales.
