Casual styles have become the bestselling for stationary sofas, while contemporary styles are tops in the recliners and casual and contemporary styles together control the motion sofa category.
That's one of the key findings from Furniture/Today's 2015 Upholstery Fabric and Style Survey. Earlier this year, more than 100 furniture stores reported unit sales of upholstered furniture selling through their stores.
Fabric covers for stationary sofas are diverse. Chenille wovens hold an overall 19% unit market share for stationary, while microdeniers have a 17% share, leather a 16% share and faux leather captures a 15% unit share of stationary sofas.
Covers for motion sofas and recliners are less varied. With motion sofas, faux leathers comprise 38% of all units sold and leather accounts for 23%. When it comes to recliners, leather dominates at 31% of reclining chair units, followed by faux leathers at 16%.
Furniture/Today's exclusive report, the 2015 Upholstery Fabric and Style Survey, reflects the answers of more than 100 furniture stores.
Each store's 2014 unit sales of upholstery were used as the basis for the market share data. Contacted during July and August, retailers based responses for styles and fabric covers in stationary sofas, motion sofas and reclining chairs at low, middle, upper-middle and high price points.
To determine market share, responses were weighted to reflect a retailer's unit sales in each category and at each price level. The response from a store with annual sales of $20 million in stationary was given greater weight than sales from a store generating $5 million for the category.
