America's love affair with grilling continues to be strong. Nearly eight out of ten consumers own a grill and 79% of owners grill out once a week or more, according to exclusive results from Casual Living and HGTV's Outdoor Spaces Survey.
The grill is often seen by buyers as an outdoor space's cornerstone piece. A full half of responding consumers purchase it first when designing an outdoor living area.
Half of specialty retailers predict 2012 grill sales will be higher than in 2011. And, another 37% think next year's grill sales will be the same as this year. That positive forecast is one of the findings from Casual Living's exclusive Grill Survey, conducted among specialty retailers this September. Total 2011 grill retail sales are projected at $3 billion, up a slight 1.2% from an estimated $2.96 billion in 2010.
This exclusive report combines results from a specialty grill retailer survey with those of a HGTV consumer survey:
Casual Living's exclusive 2011 Retailer Grill Survey is based on responses of specialty retailers operating nearly 600 stores. Store locations represent all regions of the country with 31% in the South; 29% in the Midwest; 25% in the West and 20% in the Northeast. Responding retailers include casual furniture specialists, hearth, pool and spa specialists, full-line furniture stores, hardware stores, direct-to-consumer retailers, designers and gift and home accent specialists.
The exclusive consumer data is based on two Casual Living Outdoor Spaces Surveys, each conducted in partnership with HGTV. The 2011 survey is based on the responses of 6,473 U.S. consumers and the 2009 survey is based on the responses of 12,800 U.S. consumers. Consumers were surveyed for both via an online survey linked to HGTV's Ideas e-newsletter.
