Casual Living & HGTV Consumer Views: Shopping for and buying outdoor furniture

Originally published in the September 2010 print issue of Casual Living

The economic recession has caused consumers to change spending habits in ways many thought would never happen. But, the recession did happen and spending habits will likely never be the same. Several consumers are evaluating their buying patterns and making clear conscious decisions about all purchases, both big and small.

Per the exclusive Casual Living and HGTV 2010 Outdoor Furniture Survey, 29% of consumers plan to purchase an outdoor dining set in 2010; nearly one-third in 2011. For conversation groups, roughly three out of 10 consumers are planning a purchase this year and 37% for 2011. These are just a few of the many results found within this report.

This exclusive consumer analysis is based on the responses of 9,126 U.S. consumers. Casual Living, in partnership with HGTV, surveyed consumers via an online survey linked to HGTV's Ideas newsletter in April 2010. Because of the large sample size, the survey data can be projected, within this population, with a margin of error of plus or minus less than 1%.

The research was analyzed by Casual Living’s research department, led by Research Director Dana French and Research Analyst Daphne Garland-McLean.
