Casual Living and HGTV 2010 Consumer Views: Dining Sets

Originally published in the October 2010 print issue of Casual Living

As many consumers enjoy entertaining family and friends in their outdoor spaces, it is important to incorporate the space with outdoor furniture that fits the need. The dining set, which is a key element in al fresco dining and entertainment, is a vital piece in that puzzle. This product category provides seating, a place to eat food as well as a place to relax. For home events that spill into the outdoor space, the outdoor dining set can help set the stage for fun times.

According to the exclusive Casual Living and HGTV 2010 Outdoor Furniture Survey, more than three-fifths of consumers plan to purchase a dining set in 2010 or 2011. Of those planning to buy this year, 37% will be first-time buyers and 63% will be replacing an existing dining set. For consumers purchasing in 2011, 35% will purchase a set for the first time and 65% will be repeat buyers who are replacing a current dining set. These findings and more are revealed in this report.

This exclusive consumer analysis is based on the responses of 9,126 U.S. consumers. Casual Living, in partnership with HGTV, surveyed consumers via an online survey linked to HGTV's Ideas newsletter in April 2010. Because of the large sample size, the survey data can be projected, within this population, with a margin of error of plus or minus less than 1%.

The research was analyzed by Casual Living’s research department, led by Research Director Dana French and Research Analyst Daphne Garland-McLean.
