*From the June 22, 2009 print issue of Furniture Today*
Furniture Today’s exclusive report, Beyond the Top 100, lists 100 independent furniture stores that are significant players in their respective markets.
This list is by no means comprehensive. Many more than the 100 furniture stores listed here are strong retailers within their communities. This survey does not rank companies, nor is it a continuation of the Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores, which published in the May 25, 2009 issue.
All sales figures and ranges are Furniture Today estimates and are for total 2008 store sales, which may include revenues from the sale of products other than furniture, bedding and decorative accessories, such as consumer electronics and major appliances.
The detailed analysis includes:
1. The 100 Beyond stores have more than 6.8 million square feet of selling space
2. The Beyond stores operated a total of 405 stores in 2008
3. 81 of the Beyond stores offer mid-priced lines; 32 offer high-end and 16 offer promotional lines
4. On average, stores on the list have 67 total employees and 24 sales associates
Furniture Today compiled this report by surveying independent retailers, researching business newspaper archives and speaking with furniture industry insiders. Information was gathered, compiled and analyzed by Group Research Manager Dana French, with assistance from Database Coordinator Cynthia Myers.
