Originally printed in the June 18, 2012, issue of Furniture Today Furniture Today's ranking of the Top 15 Bedding Producers ranks companies according to 2011 U.S. wholesale bedding shipments. Returns, as well as shipments to Puerto Rico are excluded. Contract shipments are included in figures. Adjustments, including sales allowances and incentives, are also included and are reported in the notes when available. All figures, except those of publicly held companies which break out U.S. bedding shipments as a separate line of business, and those who supply audited or accountant-verified figures, are Furniture Today market research estimates. All figures are for the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2011 and 2010. Three of bedding's top five bedding producers – Sealy, Tempur-Pedic and Select Comfort - are publicly held and supplied shipment figures for 2011 to the newspaper. The other two Top Five producers – Serta and Simmons, both owned by Ares Management and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan – supplied audited or accountant-verified figures. That means that the shipment figures for the five largest bedding producers meet the highest standards for accuracy. One other producer, E.S. Kluft & Co., is also in that category. It supplied accountant-verified figures to Furniture/Today. Together, these six companies represent 83% of the Top 15 and 71% of the industry. The remaining bedding producers on the Top 15 list – a group that includes Corsicana, Comfort Solutions, Therapedic, Englander, Kingsdown, Restonic, Spring Air, Symbol, Lady Americana and Southerland – are ranked on the basis of a Furniture/Today survey of producers, analysts and suppliers. In preparing for the Top 15 bedding producers report, Furniture/Today asks some two dozen bedding producers to provide sales estimates for other bedding producers. The newspaper informs all bedding producers that if they cannot supply audited or accountant-verified figures, it will rely on an industry survey to determine a shipment figure for them. Furniture/Today takes all of those estimates from producers, analysts and suppliers, a total sample that runs into the hundreds, and averages them to arrive at its estimates for the various producers who haven’t supplied audited or accountant-verified figures.
